They are places for people to stop during walks and wanders of all kind, equipped with only the bare necessities such as places to sleep, a fire place and if you’re lucky a shovel to create your own toilets. There is one most important rule to Bothies, however, you cannot deny another person entry.In a sense the Bothy is a transient space in which people can move freely through, adding or subtracting as they desire, exchanging food, games and stories with one another. Through communal action we hope that this project can successfully manoeuvre the essence of Bothy culture into a new context.The workshop focused on collective action in the creation of space, looking at the culture of trespass that brought both the Right to Roam and Bothies into existence. We examine word choice in speech and writing, creating works that reflect the impact language has on how we engage with information. Whether consciously or subconsciously the language we use is a reflection on power and position. Discourse around the built environment is no exception to this rule and our word choices can either encourage or undermine new voices. The conversations that shape our cities should be easily accessible to all, however, the language we use to discuss architecture can be complex, often purposefully so. The manifesto we set out from the beginning was to highlight under-represented and radical projects in architecture and all its peripheries. We wanted to create an accessible, but not dumbed down, publication that would extend the reaches of architectural practice beyond what is the norm to many.We open Umarell up to everyone, architect or not, we don’t believe in the elitist narrative that a lot of architects perpetuate. Architecture is unavoidable in life and through deepening people’s understanding of the built environment we hope that they will begin to question these places and take action against architecture’s many injustices.Umarell was started by Rory Thomas, Katy Hope and Andrew Wilson, we all met whilst studying at the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow. It takes many more than just us to do the projects we have done so also a big thanks to everyone we have worked with, whether that be on the publication or our built projects. Each person has an individual network of connections, from the intangible and ephemeral nature of our shared memories, to our senses, which physically root us within our environments. In this issue we want to explore connection across its multitude of forms, its existence within the human condition and as a physical manifestation.At their most basic, Umarells observe and comment. This one-two punch is what inspired us to begin with, the line we always use introducing ourselves is that we ‘highlight underrepresented architectural ideas’, probably a rather grand summation for what is a confused mix between a magazine and a book, but anyhow, we focus on the connection between built environment and people. A connection which is unnurtured and broken, often taken advantage of to create more divide. We want to, even on our relatively small scale, repair the disconnect between people and built environment through education. This is why we open up Umarell to everyone, because everyone needs to have a say, not just us.
