In Tongues

Exhibited as part of the Architecture Fringe Festival 2025, In Tongues explores the role of language in architecture and how it maintains exclusivity within the profession, often discouraging entry into it. We examine word choice in speech and writing, creating works that reflect the impact language has on how we engage with information.

Whether consciously or subconsciously the language we use is a reflection on power and position. Discourse around the built environment is no exception to this rule and our word choices can either encourage or undermine new voices. The conversations that shape our cities should be easily accessible to all, however, the language we use to discuss architecture can be complex, often purposefully so.

The aim is to consider how we as architects engage with each other and the wider public, moving towards a relationship with language that is more open and approachable.
